How To Manage Your Stress and Anxiety In Unsettling Times

By Marilyn O’Malley, CPCC

  1. Manage Your Mind:

When you think about something upsetting, real or imagined, this triggers the body’s fight or flight response which primes you physically to fend off actual danger. Unless you find ways to interrupt this mind-body feedback loop, your stress level will maintain itself or escalate.

    • Physical exercise is the shortest route to mental calm. It works well because tension (mental or physical) is experienced and expressed in the body.
    • Mindful meditation can elicit the relaxation response the antidote to the fight or flight reaction. Breathing, guided imagery
    • Changing your perspective from what you don’t want to what you do want
    • Get plenty of sleep

  1. Connect With Others:

· Share you problem with those who can help you. Remember you are not alone!

· Laugh and find humor in your life

· Get and give hugs or any physical contact that helps you to relax

  1. Develop Your Inner Strengths:

· Resilience is the ability to bounce back after hard times. Change what’s not working to get new results and move you forward

· Gratitude is awareness of all the wealth, health, love, environment and events that make up your life

· Love for yourself, others and our universe
